Sir Paul McCartney closed the Isle Of Wight Festival with a tribute to Jimi Hendrix to mark his 40th anniversary of the rocker's legendary performance at the festival, which was his last major event before he died
Sir Paul McCartney performed a sensational set in front of tens of thousands of fans last night as he closed the Isle of Wight Festival.
After he was introduced by James Corden over a pre-recorded video link, he went on to belt out some of Britain’s favourite Beatles songs, along with some of his solo hits
Tens of thousands of fans went crazy as Sir Paul McCartney closed the Isle Of Wight Festival on Sunday night
Macca first kicked off his gig with ‘Venus And Mars Rockshow’ before getting straight into ‘Jet’.
He told fans: ‘We’re going to have fun tonight’, before diving into the Beatles’ track ‘All My Loving’ and the 67-year-old also paid tribute to Jimi Hendrix to mark the 40th anniversary of his legendary performance at the festival – the last major event before he died.
To honour Hendrix, Macca sang a few bars from 'Purple Haze' at the end of 'Let Me Roll It'.
Pink also put on a spectacular show on Sunday by bringing her Funhouse stage show to the festival, which mimicked an acrobatic performance just as much as a vocal one.
In a tribute to England, Sir Paul McCartney waved the British flag across the stage in front of fans
Meanwhile Pink dropped out of a box which was suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a crane
She first made a dramatic entrance by dropping out of a box suspended hundreds of feet in the air from a crane.
The vertigo-inducing act didn’t faze her though and she soon started singing a shortened version of ‘Get This Party Started’.
The 30-year-old also saluted the World Cup by using a vuvuzela trumpet as one of her props before climbing into a massive inflated ball and rolling around on top of her fans.
Pink was pretty chuffed to be performing on the same night as Macca too and said: ‘I can’t believe I’m playing on the same stage as Paul McCartney….And he’s a vegetarian too.’
Pink put on a spectacular show of acrobats along with her vocal performance that drew in thousands of fans
A total of 55,000 people attended the festival, which also headlined The Strokes and Jay-Z, who brought Kanye West on stage as his special guest.
Before performing a set of classics and new material at the festival, Debbie Harry of Blondie fell down the steps of the Absolute radio camper van leaving her red-faced. She told the station's DJ Ben Jones that she still loved being on stage.
Pink performed on the Main Stage, at the the Isle of Wight Festival, at Seaclose Park in Newport and said she was honoured to be performing on the same stage as Sir Paul McCartney
She said: ‘We all enjoy performing and the opportunity to come over here, you know, we've always had a lot of fans over here and that was the motivation in itself.
‘This festival is legendary, it's great, you know, when you think of Hendrix, of Dylan and the people that have played here in the past in the 70s, it's a legendary festival
Thousands of festival goers waited to watch Pink perform on the main stage at the Isle of Wight Music Festival
Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine, also told Absolute radio that despite her recent success, she still decorated her stage with items from pound shops.
She said: ‘Interflora coming with us? No it's still pound shop flowers cause that's what I used to decorate my stage with when I was just by myself.
Ed MacFarlane of Friendly Fires also performed on the Main Stage on Sunday and made sure to rock some dancing moves
‘It was like, 'Oh go down to the pound shop get like a picture of the Virgin Mary and some fake flowers and put them on the stage.' Nothing's changed.’
Other acts who performed at this years festival included: Editors, Ed MacFarlane of Friendly Fires, Orbital, La Roux, Crowded House, The Saturdays, Spandau Ballet, Suzi Quatro and Biffy Clyro, to name a few.
British artists Editors rocked out on Sunday, the final day of the festival
Football fans also had a chance to watch the England World Cup match on a large screen on the Saturday night, meaning they didn't miss out on the action while attending the event.
The crowds joined in a mass sing-along of football anthem ‘Three Lions’ to send as a message of support to the England team in South Africa.
And although the event started in traditional British festival fashion with downpours of rain as campers arrived, the site dried out by Saturday and remained calm for the rest of the weekend
British Festival goer Tom Rowell from Fareham got muddy when wet weather kicked off the weekend
