Happy couple: Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles last night But she and her country music singer Urban decided to keep mum until just recently in order to protect all those involved.
Nicole Kidman has opened up for the first time about her new daughter.
The actress and husband Keith Urban revealed earlier this month that they had welcomed Faith Margaret to the family after she was born via a surrogate.
Speaking at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles last night, the 43-year-old star said keeping the surrogacy process quiet was difficult because she wanted to share the exciting news.
Speaking to E! presenter Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet, Nicole said: 'I wanted to be able to tell everybody because I was so excited about her.
'[But] we just decided this was our thing together. It kind of just perpetuated itself.'
'[And] it protects her and it protects everyone in the situation.'
Affectionate display: Nicole opened up for the first time about her new daughter Faith Margaret, who was born via a surrogate
Stunning: The actress looked incredible in a black dress complete with lace panelling around the décolletage and back
The Australian actress presented Colin Firth with his best actor award at last night's glitzy event for his role in The King's Speech.
However despite being nominated herself for best actress for her film Rabbit Hole, she lost out on the honour with Natalie Portman pipping her to the post for Black Swan.
Nicole and Keith released a join statement on January 17, revealing their happy news about Faith Margaret - three weeks after she was born to a gestational carrier at The Women's Hospital at Centennial Medical Center in Kidman and Urban's adopted hometown of Nashville.
Meet and greet: The actress signs autographs for fans, but missed out on winning best actress at the event for her role in Rabbit Hole
Nicole already has a two-year-old daughter, Sunday Rose, with Urban, plus adopted children Isabella, 18, and Connor, 15 from her previous relationship with Tom Cruise.
Kidman added that Faith Margaret's name was inspired by her own family and adopted southern hometown.
'It's that southern double name,' she said, adding that Margaret was the name of her beloved grandmother who had her last baby aged 49.
'She's my inspiration,' Kidman added.
Congratulations: She presented Colin Firth with his gong for best actor in the King's Speech
Crazy curls: singer Beyonce stepped out in New York on Friday with a head full of dishevelled curls
She is known to change her look from time to time.
And in doing so Beyonce always looks polished.
But the singer seems to have had a hairstyle slip as she stepped out in New York on Friday.
Looking somewhat dishevelled, the 29-year-old hid her blonde locks underneath a hoodie.
And it's little wonder why - the singer's hair, which is usually sleek and styled, was out of control.
Looking like she had just rolled out of bed, the wife of rapper Jay-Z couldn't contain her wayward curls.
Beyonce's locks also looked like they had been lightened.
The singer, who is partial to the more paler shade, seems to be struggling to stay away from the bottled bleach.
Known to not be afraid of a tress change, she has tried several different hair colours, including red and brown.
However chic: The singer still looked stylish in her outfit as she made her way around Hells Kitchen
Out and about in Hells Kitchen, Beyonce didn't however disappoint on the outfit front and dressed in a pair of black pants, top and matching boots.
The grey coat covering her curls looked snug and warm with it's fur trimmed hood. The singer accessorised the ensemble with a pair of military style boots and a chic Chanel bag.
Shy starlet: The 29-year-old hid under her hood as she ran her errands
With full red lips, she was all smiles for the camera and was accompanied by a big burly bodyguard.
Meanwhile Beyonce and Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood are currently in negotiations to team up on a third remake of A Star Is Born.
Warner Bros have confirmed that the pair are in talks for a green-lit fourth version of the classic film, slated for release in 2012.
Usually styled: Beyonce usually steps out with more sleek and polished tresses
Beyonce signed on to the project back in 2008, but was rumoured to have dropped out after lengthy delays.
The Single Ladies hit-maker will take on the role previously held by Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland in the 1976 and 1954 adaptations, and Janet Gaynor in the 1937 original.
She will play up and coming starlet Esther Blodgett, later Vicki Lester, who falls for a has-been rock-star.
Beyonce proved her acting chops in Oscar-winning musical Dreamgirls in 2006, as well as portraying Etta James in Cadillac Records.
Bad influence: Miley Cyrus, 18, has been voted the worst role model for young girls by an AOL poll beating out competition from Lindsay Lohan and Demi Lovato
Miley Cyrus has been voted the worst celebrity role model for young girls in a new poll of teenage girls themselves.
The 18-year-old singer and actress has topped the list for the second year in a row due to her scandalous behaviour over the past 12 months.
Miley beat out competition from Lindsay Lohan and Demi Lovato - despite both of them entering rehab in 2010.
This poll comes a month after Miley was caught on video smoking a bong containing a drug called salvia.
Although not illegal it is listed as a 'drug of concern' by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
The survey was conducted by AOL website Just So You Know and was voted on by their core audience of girls aged between nine and 15.
Miley received more than 58 per cent of the 99,000 votes.
Also in the top 10 celebrity with the worst influence were Teen Mom star Amber Portwood, rapper Kanye West and Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford, who was arrested for marijuana possession.
Growing up: Miley has made a definite effort to shed her good girl image and her Hannah Montana persona
Miley began her career starring on the Disney show Hannah Montana and she acquired a very young fan base.
Despite other celebrities her age also acting out, like Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen, Miley made her fortune through her younger fans so is thought to be held to a higher standard.
Seemingly desperate to shed her good girl image, Miley has been pictured wearing scandalous outfits, dancing provocatively in nightclubs and drinking alcohol abroad despite the legal age in the U.S. being 21 and driving while talking on her cell phone which is illegal.
On her 18th birthday in November, Miley was seen engaging in some very adult behaviour with her boyfriend Aran Jogia, 18.
She was pictured sprawled over the bar of Hollywood club Trousdale while Jogia was straddled on top of her kissing her neck.
Miley has also been caught publicly kissing ex-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth and has been linked to several other boys including Nick Jonas.
The actress is currently filming her latest movie So Undercover in New Orleans. The action comedy is based in a sorority house and co-stars Entourage's Jeremy Piven.

The King's Speech beat out stiff competition to win top film honours at tonight's Screen Actor's Guild award, with Colin Firth scooping the Outstanding Actor honour.
The film won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, beating favourites The Social Network and The Fighter.
Its win leaves the race wide open for this year's Oscar ceremony, with many tipping the Best Picture category to be the closest in years.

In his speech, Firth paid tribute to his 'dream cast,' who included Geoffrey Rush as speech therapist Lionel Logue, Anthony Andrews as Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen Mother. 'This is really something,' he said.

All smiles: Firth holds his two awards aloft following the ceremony at The Shrine Auditorium
The win caps a sensational week that has seen The King's Speech win trophies from the Producers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America. Both are seen as powerful nods as to which stars and what film will collect the top awards on Oscar night.
For several weeks the Oscar front-runner was the Facebook film The Social Network which had been winning prizes on what seemed like a daily basis, including the best film from the Golden Globes.
But over the past couple of weekends, The King's Speech halted The Social Network's advance when its producers took the PGA award.
Oscar favourite: The Social Network's stars Armie Hammer, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg introduce the film on stage , but they ultimately lost out to The King's Speech
Fighting funny: The Fighter stars Amy Adams and Mark Wahlberg share a laugh on stage
And on Saturday The King's Speech director Tom Hooper surprised Hollywood by winning the DGA main award for best director.
The awards are voted for by members the American film actors union.
It is a highly significant indicator as to who will at the Oscars next month as the acting branch represents the largest voting block in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars.
Success: Natalie Portman adds to her awards haul as she accepts the Best Actress gong from Jeff Bridges
In the Outstanding Actress category, favourite Natalie Portman cemented her position as Oscar favourite when she took the big prize for her role as a tortured ballerina in Black Swan, accepting the award from Jeff Bridges, who lost out to Colin Firth.
She thanked her parents 'who taught me to work my hardest, and to my fiance Benjamin Millepied. I love you very much,' she said.
The actress is expecting her first child by Millepied, who also appeared in Black Swan.

Alec Baldwin surprised the audience by winning for the fifth consecutive time, beating Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer for the Outstanding Actor in a Comedy series.
'I don't know what to say. This is ridiculous,' he said.

Funny family: The cast of hit TV comedy series Modern Family look delighted at their win for Outstanding Comedy Ensemble

Runway ready: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore looked dazzling as they arrived on the red-carpet for the Colcci show in Brazil tonight
Demi Moore almost took the spotlight away from her younger husband as she joined Ashton Kutcher at a fashion show tonight.
The Hollywood actress, who is pushing 50, appeared half her age in a tiny mini-dress, which flaunted her enviable long and lean legs.
The 48-year-old who herself looked runway-ready, arrived with Ashton for the Colcci show at the Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil.
Walking hand-in-hand with the 32-year-old actor, she dazzled in the form-fitting frock paired with metallic heels and clutch.
Demi's hair was also at it's natural best, long, sleek and free flowing. Ashton was starring in the fashion show, previewing the label's 2011-2012 Fall collection.
Romantic: Ashton couldn't help but whisper sweet nothings in his wife's ear as they walked the red-carpet
Unable to take his eyes off his sexy wife, he whispered sweet nothings into her ear as she beamed to the camera.
Later, Ashton took his turn on the catwalk.
The 6'3'' actor and male model smouldered as he strutted confidently.
Catwalk king: Later Ashton took to the catwalk to model the designer's collection
Cheeky: Ashton put on his trademark grin under-wraps in the show
And he struggled to keep his trademark cheeky grin under wraps as he reached the end of the runway.
Ashton modelled jeans, a v-neck t-shirt and a leather jacket for the fashion label. At the end of the show he emerged alongside the designer who hugged him to thank him for his hard work.
The A-list couple jetted into the South American country this week after spending some time in the snowfields at this year's Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
Happy with the job: the designer from the fashion label thanked Ashton for his hard work
They were also joined by Demi's youngest daughter, 16-year-old Tallulah Belle who did not attend the fashion show.
Earlier this weekend the couple attended a party hosted by Brazilian football star Ronaldo to kick of Sao Paulo Fashion Week.
The dinner party, held at Dom restaurant, was attended by a host of local celebrities as well as the Hollywood superstar couple.
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen also model for Colcci during the shows, which runs through until Wednesday.

Brave face: Katie Holmes attended the Sundance premiere of her new movie Son of No One despite false claims that people walked out of an earlier screening
Early reports that her new film was booed by critics are said to have left Katie Holmes in tears.
But the actress laughed off the controversy as she attended the premiere of Son of No One last night.
Katie smiled and joked with fellow cast members Channing Tatum and Ray Liotta and was animated when she took to the stage for a question and answer session at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
Wearing a black and white polka-dot blouse and jeans, Katie looked relaxed despite the controversy.
A film trade writer had claimed that there was a 'mass exodus' of people leaving the movie theatre before the film ended during a screening at Sundance last week.
It was also reported by the Hollywood Reporter that people groaned when Katie appeared on screen.
But the Daily Mail's award winning film writer Baz Bamigboye said Katie was wrongly savaged.
'I was at the screening at the Yarrow Hotel on Monday and such claims are lies and were penned to damage the actress' professional reputation', Baz said. 'The writer of the article wasn't even at the screening'.
Promoting: Katie attended a Q&A session to talk about the small role she has in the film that co-stars Ray Liotta, Channing Tatum and Al Pacino
The 32-year-old, who only has a small supporting role in the film, was left in two minds about going to the premiere but ultimately decided to support the film and attend.
The Son of No One was directed by Dito Montiel and features a powerful performance by Channing Tatum as a New York police officer who may have been involved in a double murder when he was a schoolboy.
Katie, married to Tom Cruise, plays Tatum's screen wife, with the film also featuring Juliette Binoche and Al Pacino.
Baz commented: 'She's perfectly fine in the movie. To be sure, some people had issues with aspects of the film's plot but that had nothing to do with Holmes.'
Team-player: The 32-year-old was animated as she hit the stage to talk about her role as Channing Tatum's wife in the film
The Son of No One's producer Cassian Elwes also rushed to Katie's defence and said: 'There wasn't a mass exodus. The people who did see it, like the film.
'We've already received three offers on the film. We're 100 per cent behind Katie and the entire cast's performance in this film.
'She loves the film and she's great in it. She's very upset by this attack', Mr Elwes added.
Katie happily signed autographs and took pictures with adoring fans outside the theatre.
Rising above it: Katie is said to have been 'very upset' about claims she was booed whenever she came on screen a viewing last week but smiled with fans
She wore a gold chain with a pendant with the letter S, presumably in reference to her daughter Suri.
Before her trip to Utah, Katie spent some quality time with her four-year-old and took her to a stable in Los Angeles.
The mother and daughter duo enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon at the Equestrian Center in Brentwood.
Katie dressed casually in jeans, a black and grey striped sweater and black riding boots looked perfectly decked out for the occasion.
Meanwhile, Suri wore a pink ruffled skirt and pink and white boots for her adventure. She added a blue jacket to keep warm.
Horsing around: Katie and her four-year-old daughter Suri Cruise spent the afternoon together at the Equestrian Center in Brentwood on Friday
Although she is getting to the age to be too big to be picked up, Suri rested her legs for a while and was held in her mother's arms as they had a look at the all the horses.
Katie is currently working on the new film Jack and Jill with Adam Sandler which she will surely hope is a hit. She has not had much commercial film success in the past few years.
But there is also talk of her returning to Broadway later in the year but nothing has yet been finalised.
Fun day out: Katie gave Suri a ride while looking at the horses

Back to her best: A skinny Kim Kardashian teeters on her sky high Louboutins as she nips out in Beverly Hills
Just a few weeks ago a repentant Kim Kardashian was regretting her overindulgence as she admitted to putting on 10lbs.
But the reality star revealed her newly slimmed down figure today after kicking herself back into shape - and taking two gruelling bootcamp classes a day.
Kim, 30, has been attending the exhausting 'Barry's Bootcamp classes' in Hollywood which 'combine drill sergeant tactics with a party atmosphere'.
She wrote on her Twitter page recently: 'Did 2 bootcamp classes yesterday, and might go for 2 today! I thought GlamSquadBTS was going to throw up!'
The hard work has obviously paid off - the difference in her figure was clear as she stepped out in Beverly Hils today.
Balancing on her sky-high ruffled Louboutins, she looked slim and trendy in artfully torn designer jeans, her waist highlighted by a black vest with a white shirt over the top.
In great shape: Kim has been working out constantly since Christmas, after admitting she had let her exercise routine slide on her move to New York
It was a different story at Christmas when Kim admitted that she stopped working out when she visited Europe for a holiday with her mother at the end of the summer before continuing her lack of inactivity as she filmed Kim And Kourtney Take New York.
'I pride myself on working out and being very good,' she said to TV chef Rachel Ray. 'But when I went to New York, I went to Europe for three weeks before that and then here for six weeks, I went to the gym just one time – I'm humiliated to say that.' 'I gained like 10lbs and of course all over the internet it's like, 'I'm pregnant'.'
